Is One Better Than the Other When It Comes to Gaming?

When it comes to producing conflict, gaming as a media medium is quite unusual. While the ordinary TV viewer is unlikely to engage in a passionate discussion with a buddy about why Virgin Media is a better option than Sky, gamers will fight to the death to defend the things they love, whether it’s a certain game, system, or even a particular style of play. The latest console generation has shaken the gaming world for eight years. However, a more subtle conflict has been raging in the background. Where console gamers scream and growl at one another, PC players almost pitifully giggle over their wine glasses. The recent debuts of the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One prompted much snickering among PC gamers, with TotalBiscuit (YouTube PC gaming reviewer) routinely making jokes about the consoles’ technical specifications compared to the PC. The discovery that Microsoft had been using PCs to demonstrate Xbox One games had little effect on PC gamers’ arrogant superiority on Twitter.

They do, after all, have a point. In terms of technology, the PC comes out on top. The Xbox One and PS4 both have 8GB of memory. And however, a high-end gaming PC will typically have more than 16GB. The GPU in the PS4 has a capacity of 1.84 teraflops, whereas the NVIDIA GTX Titan has a total of 4.5 teraflops, which is a bit excessive. Another huge advantage of PC gaming is its flexibility, with many games allowing you to play with a controller or a gamepad, alter a bigger number of settings when needed, and distribution platforms like Steam allowing you to install games on many devices at once without having a disc.

The tremendous amount of possibilities afforded by modding is, in my opinion, the primary benefit of PC gaming. The console gaming industry lacks modding, but the PC gaming industry has embraced it. Modding allows for more maps, gameplay improvements, new characters, new weapons, and new game types, to name a few. Modding improves a game’s playability and helps aspiring programmers gain experience designing game software without having to start from scratch with a new project. It also enables the introduction of a variety of fun and intriguing gameplay features to games, such as the DayZ mod for Arma II or the Carmageddon mod for Grand Theft Auto IV.

Despite this, I continue to value console gaming. Some of the most successful and pleasant game series in the world would not exist today if it weren’t for console gaming; Halo (at least as an FPS), Metal Gear Solid, and – a boyhood favorite – Crash Bandicoot were all developed for consoles rather than PC. Because most game developers target consoles, PC games might occasionally feel like bad copies of console-optimized titles. Skyrim, for example, tweaked the regular Elder Scrolls menu structure to make it more console-friendly, which console gamers enjoyed but irritated PC players.

The fact that the technology I pay money for will still be up to date in 5 years is the main reason I’ve kept with console gaming throughout my life, something that is much less likely in PC gaming. While console generations often span at least five years, PC technology will have advanced significantly over that time, making it very simple for PC gamers to fall behind and be forced to acquire costly new components to keep up. I don’t see this as a promising opportunity as a low-income student. My current Xbox 360, on the other hand, is an original Core model, which was discontinued about five years ago. Despite its age, it performs well as any other Xbox 360, which isn’t the case with an 8-year-old PC.

As a result, PC gaming is a far more versatile and powerful platform than console gaming. On the other hand, PC gaming is significantly more expensive for the customer. On the other hand, gaming on a console is a one-time investment that ages far more slowly and requires far less “updating”.
